
Appearance and Properties: White rhombic crystals or powder, deliquescent in air, easily soluble in water, ethanol, acetone and other solvents, neutral aqueous solution. It reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid to produce yellow sodium bisulfate, with iron salts to produce blood-red ferric thiocyanate, and no reaction with ferrous salts. It reacts with cobalt salts to produce deep blue cobalt thiocyanate.
Uses: Used as a solvent for polyacrylonitrile fiber spinning, a chemical analytical reagent, a color film developer, a defoliant for certain plants, and a herbicide for airport roads. It is also used in pharmaceuticals, dyeing, rubber processing, black nickel plating, and the manufacture of artificial mustard oil.
